Alternative Modern Rock Songs 2011
Sounds range from the dirty guitars of grunge to the gloomy soundscapes of Gothic rock to the guitar pop revivalism of Brit pop to the shambolic performance style of twee pop.
The New York Times in 1989 asserted that the Alternative Rock genre is “guitar music first of all, with guitars that blast out power chords, pick out chiming riffs, buzz with fuzztone and squeal in feedback.”

Any torrentz??

No torrents Alex, if you like the music, consider supporting the artists by buying the songs. It only costs peanuts anyway.

Ok, updated the playlist, still missing 5 songs, but I do have 89 of them on there:
http://grooveshark.com/playlist/DJ+White+Hawk+2011+Alternative+Modern+Rock+Songs+djwhitehawk+/64768937
This is what’s missing right now:
20 Manchester Orchestra – April Fool
53 Switchfoot – Dark Horses
77 Symphony Of Nine – Tonight
78 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – If I Had A Gun
92 Lacuna Coil – Trip The Darkness
I don’t think Switchfoot wants to be on Grooveshark, and Symphony of Nine is very unheard of right now.

Nickelback? Are you serious?
Also, Whirring from the Joy Formidable was originally released in 2010.

I’m not a Nickelback fan either (And I Live in Canada), but to each his own. I think I have a bigger problem with Coldplay being on the list.
But, if you don’t like it, don’t listen to it.
I’m sure there are bands you listen to that most people on here would give you a hard time for.

As a bunch of videos aren’t working on youtube do to UMG errors or they are private, so I decided to take a look on Grooveshark. So far only 3 of the last 14 weren’t on there, but after looking, I think I will be attempting to create a new Grooveshark playlist. As the one linked on here isn’t very up to date.
I will also probably make my own playlist of my favorites from the list, I’m really liking GrooveShark as I didn’t really play with it much before.

I’ve been looking for something like this since they stopped coming out with “Alternative Times” compilations. Alternative Times let me know about so much music that I hadn’t heard before, and it also helped me keep track of new releases from some of my favorite artists.
Lately I’ve been depending on Alternative Shoutcast streams (as we don’t have Pandora in Canada). I’ll definitely be watching this, and can’t wait to see the 2012 list.

Just curious, any reason there isn’t any Awolnation or Middle Class Rut on here? Those are two bands I just found out about in 2011.

The two I’m talking about are:
Sail by Awolnation
New Low by Middle Class Rut (might be considered 2010)
I originally heard these on 181.FM The Buzz, then after a few months I started hearing them on my local Rock station.

Thanks for a great list. I’ve really enjoyed listening to (nearly) all of these.
Introduced me to some great bands I wasn’t aware of.
I got here following a Google search for “why is modern rock so 5h1t?!”
One question though? Why the “dance/electro” bands included?
Maybe I’m too old but Rock to me = acoustic drums and at least one guitar.

Glad you enjoyed the list, Mark. Funny way of looking up in the google. LOL. I agree with you about modern rock. Nothing beat classic rock so far as I know of.
Check out the ALL Time Rock list here. http://www.djwhitehawk.com/top-rock-songs-of-all-time-2011-all-time-rock.html
But occasionally there is very good modern rock too.

I really like the GrooveShark playlist instead of YouTube as a lot of the YouTube videos don’t work for me. Although they don’t have all the songs on GrooveShark, I still prefer that method. I can just let it play in the background and listen for certain songs I like or hadn’t heard before.
Thanks.

Red light king just released an album, and it’s songs are amazing! 6 songs on it deserve to make your list IMO. Built to last, bullet in my hand, past the gates, comeback,Something for the pain, and city life. But since you probably won’t put all of them up, I think built to last and comeback are best. You should at least check them out.
